Stay on top of health insurance and HMO industry trends with Oliver Wyman's Carrier Trend Survey from the Actuarial Practice.

This report is for carriers, brokers, state insurance agencies, and actuaries who are affected by the trends in the costs of healthcare. Use cases include benchmarking and reasonability testing of pricing trends and general understanding of the changes in the cost of healthcare at a specific point in time and over the course of time. Our report analyzes the changes in trend for each of the product categories over time. The historical trends (over the past 10 years) can be used to understand how changes in the market, legislation, and the economy have influenced the cost of healthcare.

Our population of data represents a very significant number of covered lives and is used by many as an industry standard for this type of analysis. Our health actuaries apply their extensive experience in pricing and reviewing healthcare costs to analyze significant trends that affect their bottom-line.

This report summarizes the January 2023 trends from the survey that Oliver Wyman sent to healthcare carriers in November 2022 and presents pricing trends used by the participating companies in the development of their rates for January 2023. These trends are used to develop premiums for approximately 99.4 million group members as reported by the participating companies. (We have made no attempt to eliminate the effects that dual coverage may have on these trends.) In addition, this edition of the report reflects pricing trends for about 6.2 million members with individual health policies, about 9.6 million Medicare members and 4.7 million Medicaid members.

The Carrier Trend Survey is published twice a year. If you would like a copy of the current Carrier Trend Survey, please provide your information here.
