One of the most striking features of healthcare reform in the United States is the explosive growth of accountable care organizations (ACOs). ACOs take responsibility for the overall health of their patients – not just treating their diseases – and are paid based on their success in controlling costs. Although many providers self-identify as ACOs, we count only those that have “flipped the switch” and are actively receiving some sort of shared savings, risk-share, or capitated payments.
